Consumers can do their part to conserve water either by changing usage habits or investing in measures to reduce use. Studies have shown that installing water saving fixtures in your home can reduce usage as much as 30-40 % on average. The resources on this page describe addtional ways to conserve water in your home as well as tips on how to get the most out of the water that you use.
Use Water Wisely
Gallons of water a day can be conserved by adjusting your water use while performing your daily tasks. One good example is shutting off running water while shaving or brushing your teeth.
Fix Leaky Faucets, Toilets and Hoses
A small leak from a faucet or toilet can cause hundreds, if not thousands of gallons of water to be wasted over time. Fixing leaks of any size will keep excess water and money from going down the drain.
Install Water-Saving Devices
There are several devices on the market, such as reduced-flow showerheads, water-saving toilets and other appliances that can help conserve water. Most of these devices can be found at your local hardware store.
Additional Water Conserving Tips:
- Plant in the spring or fall, when watering requirements are lower.
- Fully load the dishwasher and clothes washer before running.
- When washing dishes by hand do not leave the water running.
- If you have a swimming pool, use a cover. By so doing, you can cut the loss of water from evaporation by 90 percent.
- Use a broom, rather than a hose, to clean sidewalks or driveways.
- Defrost frozen food in the refrigerator or in a microwave instead of running hot water over the food.
When Watering and Maintaining your lawn
- Irrigate during early morning hours to minimize loss to evaporation, heat and winds.
- Irrigate in a manner that suits soil conditions. Ideally, infrequent deep soakings work best, but some soil conditions dictate several light applications for best moisture retention.
- Do not over water your lawn. Measure water applications to equal one inch per week for turf grass.
- Aerate the lawn, permitting it to breathe and absorb water more efficiently.
- Mulch around plants, bushes and trees to help the soil retain moisture, discourage the growth of weeds, and provide essential nutrients.
- Adjust sprinklers to avoid overspray on walks, driveways and streets.
- Repair leaky spigots, sprinkler heads, valves and hoses. One leaky drip per second can waste 6,000 gallons of water per year!
- Mow lawns at the mower’s highest setting.
- Fertilize only as needed to maintain healthy root system.
