RMU’s Facebook page is not monitored 24/7 so we may not see an outage reported on Facebook in a timely manner. If you need service from RMU please call the numbers below. But before you call to report an outage, please note the following:
RMU has a monitoring system in place that is used to detect and alert RMU staff of many types of problems with our electric distribution lines. Over 90% of all outages are reported with this system. Whether reported by phone or detected by our monitoring system, be assured that RMU will work on restoring service as soon as possible.
If RMU’s phones are busy, please be patient and remember others are likely reporting the same outage. Your calls are important to us, however the most important calls are those that help us pinpoint the location of the damage.
Many different things including lightning, high winds, auto accidents, animals and tree limbs can cause an outage. In the event of an outage, there are several things you can do to assist restoring power quickly.
First, try to determine if the cause of the outage is inside or outside your home. Check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers in your house. If blown or tripped, the problem is likely inside your home.
Second, take a look outside to see if your neighbors and businesses nearby are out of electricity also. the more customers affected the more likely RMU is already aware of the outage and is dispatching crews to make repairs. If the outage only affects a few customers, our monitoring system may not detect the interruption of service.
Third, take note of any downed power lines, utility poles, or other damage you may see. DO NOT go near any downed lines as they may still be energized.
During an outage, turn off or disconnect any appliances, equipment (like heating and cooling system) or electronics you were using when the power went out. When power is restored, those electrical devices could, if left on, cause a huge drain on the power liens and can cause line protection equipment to take the overloaded lines off line because the heavy load acts the same as a fault on the line.
Once you have your electric devices turned off or disconnected, it may be a good idea to leave just one interior and one exterior light on. This allows both you and service crews to know when power has been restored.
Prior to any outage it would be good to place a working flashlight or two in locations within your home that your can get to when the lights are out.
